Back then when I was in secondary school, I was appointed as head of school librarian. This is my first experience holding a leadership role in subject to organizational perspective. I believe the main reason I was appointed because my teacher had once asked me if I’m willing to take the role and I decided to accept the offer. There is nothing so much I could learn to become a great leader during my school days. But the experience we in school surely teaches us something.
We can agree that the moment we had in school or during teenager surely impacts to our view in life — we learn what is love really means, the importance of friendship, some may had found their purpose of life, and few may realize their stupidity toward oneself. From then on, we lead ourselves to move forward in life, guided by our past experience and wisdom if you think.
But..
Having a quality on experience and wisdom truly did not explain to me much on becoming a leader. Because the word “leader” usually associates with the others. Hence, I need to learn more, to experience and understand it better. I joined the military cadet program called reserve officer training unit with the mission to learn and experience something I did not know. The motto for this program is “Sentiasa Memimpin” which means “Always Lead” come to my attention this program might the right platform for me to experience and become the leader I wished to learn.
I still remember the first question our trainer appointed to us which is do we really want to become a military officer, sincerely to be here and not because of allowances or for the sake of having a co-curricular credit. The similarity between both of the experience is firstly come with our own choice and conviction to ourself. We lead ourselves with our conviction and belief that this is THE path. You become the leader of yourself and also the follower to yourself. Here then, we realize every leader is the follower. The ability to sync with other’s conviction and belief and having an inner courage and confidence to oneself which lead to be at front inspire others to follow their own conviction and belief.
However, we need to aware there two kinds of follower — the fools and the inspired one. The fools who did not have a belief and conviction in themselves, blindly follow something or someone as long as it could fill your emptiness within your heart and mind. And the fools is the one who give up on the middle of crisis, when they had lost touch on their delusion toward themselves. But, the inspired one, the one who already have fire within their heart, will leading themselves and other to the journey despite any crisis. He later became the symbol for the follower under his leadership and what people call “Hero”.
